Choose from a Range of Textures When You Opt for Veneers

While most of us are familiar with the range of colours and grains available when it comes to wood veneers, many among us aren’t aware of the available textures. Well, here’s a primer on the different textures or, more accurately, figures available in the market.

Figure in the world of wood refers to the appearance of texture that is created through the use of curved, wavy or uneven patterns on veneers. The various veneer figures types are discussed below.

Quilted Figure Veneers

A quilted figure gives a veneer the appearance of having been sliced from a log of wood. Visible in such a figure type are the uneven growth rings that appear on wood. These give such veneers a three-dimensional, uneven, raised and irregular look that may be described as bumpy.

Ribbon Stripe Figure Veneers

Find on such veneers long stripes down their length that alternate between dark and light shades or colours.

Flake Figure Veneers

These have a ridged surface that appears as though it may flake off. Only certain species of wood are used in the making of flake figure veneers. Here, the wood is treated in such a way that the flaky surface colouring is enhanced.

Crossfire Figure Veneers

This class of veneers possesses a distinctive array of patterns on the grain of the wood. These may appear as irregularities in or contrasting colours on the wood.

Pommele Figure Veneers

Usually seen in very large trees, this figure type is distinctive because of the patterns of rings it displays. The rings can be seen across the surface of the veneer and can be seen to engulf each other in turns. /p>

Burls Figure Veneer

Clustered buds, also known as eyes, can be seen on veneers of this figure type, around which tight, concentric circles develop.

Crotch Figure Veneers

Obtained from the point on the trunk of the tree where it joins the main branches of the tree, crotch figure veneers are riddled with thin lines that converge or meet in the central part of the veneer.

Mottled Figure Veneers

The distinctive characteristic of mottled figure veneers is the blotchy, irregular surface they possess.

Curly Figure Veneers

Seen most commonly in maple veneers, curly figure veneers have surfaces that appear to undulate with overlaps.

Fiddleback Figure Veneers

The fiddleback figure results from logs having been quarter sawn. Long, thin lines are seen across the surface of the veneer here. The value of such veneers is based on stripe regularity.

Bird’s-Eye Figure Veneers

A figure type that is in high demand, here the wood displays numerous eyes throughout its surface.
